ENGLISH VERSION:
Christmas begins on December 24th which is called "Wigilia” in Polish. Every family waits until the evening and when the first star appears on the sky then a big dinner begins. Classic polish Christmas dishes are pierogi and paszteciki. After the food we exchange the gifts. Then if anyone wants to go, there’s a midnight mass at the church.
On the 25th families usually have a Christmas breakfast and continue to celebrate.
Any special traditions?
They are waiting for the first star to sit down at the Christmas table.
Then there is another thing called "opłatek” which is a kind of waffle that we share and break with everyone before dinner while saying our wishes.
Everyone must try at least 12 different dishes.
There is always one empty place at the table for an "unexpected” guest that might be lonely on Christmas.
FRENCH VERSION:
Noël commence le 24 décembre, appelé "Wigilia" en polonais. Chaque famille attend jusqu'au soir et lorsque la première étoile apparaît dans le ciel, le dîner commence. Les plats de Noël polonais classiques sont les pierogis et les pasztecikis. Après le dîner, on échange les cadeaux. Ensuite, si jamais quelqu'un souhaite y aller, il y a une messe de minuit à l'église qui est organisée.
Le 25, les familles prennent généralement un petit déjeuner de Noël et continuent à festoyer.
Des traditions spéciales?
Ils attendent que la première étoile apparaît avant de s'asseoir à la table de Noël.
Ensuite, il y a un autre chose appelée "opłatek" qui est une sorte de gaufre que nous partageons et que nous brisons avec tout le monde avant le dîner en formulant nos souhaits.
Chacun doit essayer au moins 12 plats différents.
Il y a toujours une place vide à la table pour un invité "inattendu" qui pourrait se sentir seul à Noël.
